Wilson Gdynia Suffers Damage in Brunsbüttel Allision
On July 30, 2025, a maritime incident unfolded as the 'Wilson Gdynia', while navigating from Rotterdam, collided with dolphin 46 near the Kiel Canal's small locks in Brunsbüttel. The allision, attributed to strong winds and powerful currents, resulted in damage to the wooden dolphins. Fortunately, there were no injuries or environmental pollution reported following the event. However, the vessel sustained damage to its bulbous bow and incurred a two-meter dent in the hull above the waterline, leading to an estimated 40 tons of water entering the forepeak compartment. In response to the incident, the BG Verkehr (German Traffic Safety Authority) imposed a sailing ban on the vessel. The 'Wilson Gdynia' was secured at the railway station pilings in Brunsbüttel and remained at the location past August. Later, on February 24, during a Port State Control inspection in Stord, the ship was found to have five deficiencies noted.

RNLI Responds to Distressed Cargo Vessel Near Skerryvore
On April 12, 2014, at approximately 10:30 a.m., the Stornoway Coastguard received a distress call via VHF concerning the cargo ship 'Wilson Gdynia.' The vessel, which was transporting wood chips, had lost steerage while traveling from Muuga to Fallafoss, approximately 20 nautical miles west of Skerryvore Lighthouse and southwest of Tiree. Following the alert, the Stornoway Coastguard swiftly located the distressed ship and initiated a rescue response by launching the Barra RNLI lifeboat at 11:37 a.m. This lifeboat remained on standby as the eight crew members aboard the cargo ship awaited assistance. Later in the day, around 6 p.m., the Tobermory RNLI lifeboat was deployed to relieve the Barra lifeboat crew. Although the 'Wilson Gdynia' regained power, it was still drifting due to the loss of steerage in challenging conditions characterized by six Beaufort winds and seven-meter seas. A tugboat from Aberdeen was dispatched to tow the cargo ship to safety, though its arrival was not anticipated until the following day, April 13. Fortunately, as the ship was drifting harmlessly in a northwesterly direction without immediate hazards, the Stornoway Coastguard decided to stand down the Tobermory lifeboat at daybreak the next morning.
