Fire Investigation Underway After Blaze Erupts on 'Hanseatic Scout' Cargo Ship
On December 5, 2013, authorities began investigating the origins of a fire that broke out on the cargo ship 'Hanseatic Scout,' reportedly ignited by a digger operating on board. Fortunately, all crew members have been safely accounted for, and there were no injuries reported in the incident. Emergency crews were dispatched to Bentink dock at Lynn Port on December 4 at 11:15 a.m., responding to the fire which occurred while the digger was in the process of unloading a shipment of wood chips from the vessel. Most of the wood chip cargo had been removed or not yet loaded onto the ship. Firefighters from ten different crews worked tirelessly to extinguish the flames that had not spread beyond the digger to the cargo. Using breathing apparatus and compressed air foam, four teams of firefighters entered the open-topped hold to tackle the blaze directly, while a rescue boat stood by in readiness. Additional support was provided by a swift water rescue team, an aerial platform ladder, ambulance personnel, police, and the Coastguard. The Environment Agency and West Norfolk Council's Environmental Health team were also present at the scene, ensuring safety protocols were followed as foam was utilized to manage the fire. After two hours of intensive effort, the fire was brought under control. Although the digger remained on the ship, plans were in place to eventually relocate it.
