RMS Goole Grounding Leads to Collision on Rhine River

Aug 24, 2014 17:51

On August 21, 2014, the RMS Goole suffered an unfortunate grounding incident on the Rhine River at Grietherort, near Emmerich, while on its journey from Düsseldorf to Bilbao. The vessel, which was transporting steel, encountered trouble shortly before midnight when it lost its way and came to a halt on a shoal after overtaking two other ships. In a subsequent unfortunate turn of events, a following container ship collided with the stern of the RMS Goole. The impact caused significant damage, with authorities estimating repair costs to be in the tens of thousands of euros. The collision resulted in a substantial hole—approximately 5 square meters—above the waterline at the stern of the RMS Goole, along with extensive damage to the entire aft section. The container ship that struck the coaster also incurred bow damage. Fortunately, following a thorough investigation by the Duisburg Water Police, both vessels were cleared to continue their respective journeys. The RMS Goole made its way to the Waal Port in Rotterdam, successfully docking on August 22 at noon.
