Heroic Salvage of the 'Tove' Amidst North Sea Storms

Jan 21, 2014 09:34

On January 16, 2014, the fishing vessel 'Tove' encountered a critical engine failure while navigating from Edinburgh, causing it to drift perilously close to oil platforms in the treacherous North Sea. The situation escalated as an intense storm brewed, prompting professional tugboats to abandon their attempts to assist. Fortunately, at dawn on January 17, the crew of the Coastguard vessel 'Bergen' took charge of the rescue operation. Given the violent weather conditions, which included hurricane-force winds and towering waves reaching heights of 11 meters, the recoverable crew was unable to safely maneuver on deck. Thus, a towing connection was established at the stern of the 'Tove', when the 'Bergen' arrived around midnight. By 1:40 a.m., a towing line had been successfully attached, enabling the salvage operation to commence. Despite pulling the vessel in an easterly-northeasterly direction, the 'Bergen' struggled against the weather, causing the 'Tove' to drift northward. After 14 long hours of labor, the 'Tove' was finally secured behind the Patchbank platforms, where the weather conditions showed signs of improvement. The operation then proceeded towards Marstein, where the tug 'Luca' took over the tow, guiding the disabled vessel safely to Bergen. The 'Tove' successfully docked on January 19 at 6:30 p.m. Meanwhile, the crew of the 'Bergen', comprised of 24 members, and the six crew members on board the 'Tove' were unharmed. The 'Bergen' would then head to Haakonsvern for necessary repairs after facing extensive challenges during the arduous operation.
