International Cooperation Saves Dehydrated Sailor in High Seas Rescue

Nov 04, 2013 10:13

On the morning of November 3, 2013, an extraordinary maritime rescue unfolded 406 nautical miles northeast of Puerto Rico, when the 'AS Vincentia' and the reefer vessel 'Chiquita Scandinavia' joined forces in a dramatic SAR operation. This mission was initiated by a plea for medical help from the sailing yacht 'Scat,' whose 61-year-old sailor was suffering from severe dehydration. Coast Guard Sector San Juan quickly mobilized to respond after receiving the initial distress call. However, the vast distance from shore and the absence of nearby rescue assets presented significant challenges. In a crucial move, Coast Guard coordinators tapped into the Automated Mutual Assistance Vessel Rescue System (AMVER) to reach the 'Chiquita Scandinavia' and request its assistance. Upon arriving at the location, the crew of the 'Chiquita Scandinavia' reported facing rough and hazardous sea conditions, preventing a safe recovery of the dehydrated sailor. Not to be deterred, the Liberian-flagged 'AS Vincentia' also responded to the distress call, highlighting the power of international maritime cooperation. In a coordinated effort, the Coast Guard diverted the Cutter 'Vigorous' to the incident area. Additionally, plans were put in place to dispatch an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Borinquen to rendezvous with the cutter. Ultimately, these collective efforts were crucial in ensuring the sailor was safely transported from the 'Scat' and received the necessary medical attention.
