Collision at Sea: Russian Nuclear Icebreaker '50 Let Pobedy' Damaged by Bulk Carrier
On the night of January 26, 2025, a significant maritime incident occurred in the Kara Sea involving the prestigious Russian nuclear icebreaker '50 Let Pobedy' (IMO: 9152959). The icebreaker, which was navigating towards Ob Bay, collided with the bulk carrier 'Yamal Krechet' as it was making its way from Arkhangelsk to Sabetta, a crucial port for Novatek's Yamal LNG production. The impact resulted in a considerable gash along the port side foreship of the '50 Let Pobedy', specifically near its bow. At the time of the accident, the icebreaker was in the process of maintaining winter shipping lanes and providing escort to a cargo vessel. While the exact condition of the 'Yamal Krechet' remains unclear, it was reported that the damage sustained by the nuclear icebreaker was not near its nuclear reactor, and operations at the power plant continued without interruption. According to Atomflot, the operator responsible for Russia’s nuclear icebreakers, the '50 Let Pobedy' remained seaworthy and was able to continue its duties in the Ob Bay. However, uncertainty remains regarding whether the icebreaker will complete its scheduled winter icebreaking assignments or return to Murmansk for necessary repairs.
