Coast Guard Conducts Medevac Operation for Yasa Jupiter Crewmember Near San Juan

Jun 17, 2020 09:27

On June 13, 2020, a critical medevac mission was successfully executed by the crew from Coast Guard Air Station Borinquen. They airlifted a 26-year-old crewmember from the vessel 'Yasa Jupiter,' located approximately 60 nautical miles northeast of San Juan, Puerto Rico. The operation was initiated after Coast Guard watchstanders in San Juan received an urgent medevac request late on June 12, as the crewmember was experiencing severe abdominal pain. The 'Yasa Jupiter,' which was navigating from Casablanca to Cristobal, found itself approximately 360 nautical miles from Puerto Rico, beyond the reach of available rescue helicopters tasked with the operation. To expedite the medevac, San Juan watchstanders advised the shipping crew to redirect their course closer to Puerto Rican waters. An MH-65 Dolphin helicopter from Air Station Borinquen was dispatched to rendezvous with the vessel. Upon arrival, the helicopter crew skillfully deployed their rescue swimmer and a basket to hoist the ailing crewmember onboard. Thanks to the collaborative efforts of the Coast Guard and the ship’s crew, the patient was safely airlifted and transported to Fernando Luis Ribas Dominicci Airport in San Juan. Upon landing, Emergency Medical Services were on standby to provide immediate care and subsequently transported the crewmember to 'Centro Médico' Hospital for further medical attention.
