The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) has enacted a significant measure against the bulk carrier 'Ocean Bright', barring its entry into Australian ports as part of a commitment to safeguard the rights of seafarers. Scheduled to leave Newcastle for Zhuhai on March 8, 2026, with an estimated time of arrival on March 26, the vessel is now prohibited from docking at any Australian port for a period of six months, effective immediately. This ban will remain in place until September 4, 2026. The AMSA's enforcement action followed the receipt of a complaint regarding unpaid wages affecting the crew members. Upon arriving in Newcastle on March 3, AMSA launched an immediate investigation which revealed that a total of eight crew members were collectively owed an alarming $46,334 in wages that had gone unpaid for two months. Moreover, during a Port State inspection, the AMSA identified a series of serious compliance issues, recording 18 deficiencies in total. Four of these deficiencies were categorized as serious, providing sufficient grounds for the ship’s detention. The owner of the vessel was mandated to address these issues before the 'Ocean Bright' could be cleared for departure. Originally sailing under the name 'Yasa Team', this bulk carrier was purchased by Chinese stakeholders in November 2025 and now stands at the center of a critical maritime welfare incident.
