COVID-19 Outbreak on Qatari Yacht 'Yasmine of the Sea' Affects Crew

Sep 16, 2020 11:26

In a concerning development, five crew members aboard the luxurious yacht 'Yasmine of the Sea', owned by the Prince of Qatar, have tested positive for COVID-19. The vessel, which has a crew of 20, has been confined at the Club de Mar marina in Palma de Mallorca as health measures are enforced. The remaining crew members are awaiting PCR test results to determine if they may also be carriers of the virus after close contact with the infected individuals. The 'Yasmine of the Sea' navigated through the Mediterranean between July and August, with several members of the Qatari royal family onboard. During this period, it made notable stops, including Porto Chievo in Sardinia, a region notorious for a high rate of coronavirus infections. Allegations have surfaced asserting that both the yacht's captain and select royal family members flouted quarantine guidelines while in Italy, engaging in activities that put them at risk of exposure, such as visiting crowded locations like golf courses and swimming pools. The royal family remained onboard until September 5, 2020, when they disembarked in Valencia. The yacht reached Palma the following day, September 6. By this time, some crew members had already begun exhibiting symptoms consistent with COVID-19. Following the outbreak, the five infected crew members were relocated to a designated hotel in Palma Bay on September 10, where the local Ministry of Health is managing cases of the virus, particularly for individuals needing quarantine accommodations who do not have suitable housing, including tourists and overseas visitors.
