Bulk Carriers Remain Stranded Off Tynemouth Amid Uncertainty
The bulk carriers 'Vyritsa', 'Brasschaat', and 'Zarechensk' continue to be anchored off the coast of Tynemouth as questions linger over their future. Their owner, the Belgian shipping firm Sobelmar Antwerp NV, is believed to be in the grips of bankruptcy, causing the vessels to remain idle. Since the departure of their original crews in June 2016, replacement teams have been maintaining the ships, ensuring they remain in working order. All three ships are registered under SBM-1 INC, which operates from the same address as Sobelmar in Belgium. Sobelmar, which has contracts covering fertilizers, grains, coal, and the transportation of 800,000 tonnes of apatite concentrate annually between Murmansk and regions across Western Europe and the Baltics, was reported to be seeking bankruptcy protection back in 2015. These vessels were initially meant to be part of Sobelmar's strategy to upgrade an aging fleet. Notably, a fourth vessel from the original group, the 'Kovdor', is believed to be similarly stuck in Malta. Management of the 'Vyritsa', 'Brasschaat', and 'Zarechensk' has been undertaken by Bernhard Schulte Ship Management, which assumed operational control between June 10 and 22, deploying its own crews onboard. Currently anchored beyond the jurisdiction of the Port of Tyne, the ships have undergone inspections by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, which reported them to be in satisfactory condition. While a potential sale looms, no timeline has been provided for when these vessels may finally depart. The last recorded dry dock dates for the ships listed on Sobelmar's website are as follows: 'Brasschaat' is due for a dry dock in April 2017, 'Zarechensk' in December 2017, and 'Vyritsa' shows a last dry dock date from June 2013. Fortunately, the crews aboard have been well cared for, with timely payments and adequate provisions. Inspections by flag and class have yielded positive results for the safety and condition of the vessels.
