Collision at Sea: OOCL St. Lawrence Hits Fishing Vessel Brigitte-Z 19 Off Nieuwpoort
In a striking maritime incident, the container vessel 'OOCL St. Lawrence' (IMO: 9290414) collided with the fishing boat 'Brigitte-Z 19' on January 31, 2025, near Nieuwpoort, Belgium (Latitude: 51.3680, Longitude: 2.5994). At the time of the collision, 'OOCL St. Lawrence' was cruising towards Antwerp at a brisk speed of 20 knots. The circumstances surrounding the accident are currently under investigation. Both vessels reportedly altered their courses towards one another shortly before the impact. As the watchman aboard the fishing vessel raised the alarm and executed a hard starboard turn, the container ship made contact, grazing the trawler along its port side. Following this collision, the 'Brigitte-Z 19' listed significantly, causing its port-side boom to bend against the aft mast. The foreship of the fishing vessel sustained noticeable damage, including a large dent on its port side and dented frames around the fish hold area. Following the incident, upon confirmation of safety onboard by Thysebaerdt, the 'OOCL St. Lawrence' proceeded to its destination, arriving in Antwerp on February 1. Just hours later, the damaged trawler also made its way to port. Along the route near Boulogne-sur-Mer, French inspectors boarded the 'Brigitte-Z 19' to conduct checks for any potential oil leaks. Later that afternoon, the fishing vessel successfully docked at the port of Ostend, where it was promptly unloaded. The shipbuilder Bema, who constructed the vessel in 2020/2021, has been tasked by owner Thysebaerdt to expedite repairs and prepare the cutter for fishing operations once again. However, the repair process remains contingent on approval from the Maritime Inspectorate, with hull damage rectification planned for the future. As of February 10, the 'Brigitte-Z 19' has remained stationary in port, awaiting further action.
