On June 6, 2019, a dramatic rescue unfolded when the Coast Guard Columbia River responded to a medical emergency involving a crew member aboard the vessel 'Nordic Stavanger.' An MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter was dispatched to hoist a 26-year-old Ukrainian seaman who was experiencing painful upper-body spasms, linked to an untreated laceration. The distress call was received at 8:07 p.m. by watchstanders at Sector Columbia River, indicating that the injured crew member required urgent medical attention. At the time of the medevac request, 'Nordic Stavanger' was approximately 100 miles southwest of the entrance to the Columbia River. The aircrew quickly launched and successfully rendezvoused with the vessel 72 miles offshore. After hoisting the seaman onboard, the helicopter made its way to emergency medical services in Warrenton where the injured crew member was transferred for further treatment. Upon arrival, he was taken to Columbia Memorial Hospital in Astoria for care.
