In a recent maritime incident, the vehicle carrier 'Zeus Leader' grounded off the coast of Koichijima Lighthouse in Matsuyama City, Japan. The vessel, which was traveling from Hiroshima Port to Hofu City in Yamaguchi Prefecture, ran aground around 2 a.m. on October 8, 2024, approximately 300 meters from the landmark lighthouse. The Matsuyama Coast Guard quickly responded to the situation after receiving an alert from the ship's pilot. Heroic Rescue at Sea: NYK's Zeus Leader Saves Five Fishermen in the Western Pacific

Jun 03, 2013 17:22

In a remarkable display of maritime responsibility, the NYK car carrier Zeus Leader came to the aid of five fishermen lost at sea in the Western Pacific. The dramatic rescue unfolded on May 25, as detailed in the company's recent press release. The Zeus Leader had set sail from Yokohama on May 20, destined for Townsville, Australia, when it received an urgent call from the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) in Guam seeking assistance for five Micronesian fishermen who had been adrift for five days. Immediately responding to the distress call, Zeus Leader located the fishermen and brought them on board. Upon arrival, the crew conducted health assessments and provided clothes, food, and comfortable accommodations for the weary seafarers. The fishermen had been en route from the Hall Islands to Chuuk Island, part of Micronesia, on their small 19-foot boat to sell dried fish. However, their journey took a perilous turn when their engine malfunctioned and halted their progress. Compounded by strong squally weather and a fierce westerly current, the fishermen found themselves drifting away from the safety of land for an alarming 140 nautical miles over five days. Following the successful rescue, a patrol vessel was dispatched to rendezvous with the Zeus Leader. On May 26, the five fishermen were safely transferred to the Federated States of Micronesia's patrol boat, FSS Palikir, ensuring their swift return home. With the rescue operation concluded, the Zeus Leader continued its voyage to Australia, showcasing not only humane action but also the critical role of maritime vessels in ensuring safety at sea.
