Zeynep Kiran Overcomes Height Challenge for Kiel Canal Passage
On March 31, 2025, the bulk carrier "Zeynep Kiran" encountered a height restriction challenge during its transit from Klaipeda to Blainville sur Orne, when it was halted in the locks of the Kiel Canal at Kiel-Hiltenau. The vessel moored in the south lock at approximately 6 a.m. for a routine laser height measurement, which revealed that its overall height reached 40.33 meters, exceeding the allowable limit of 40 meters required for safe passage below the canal's bridges. To resolve this issue, tugs repositioned the "Zeynep Kiran" back to the roadstead, where the crew took on ballast water to reduce its height. After three hours of pumping, enough ballast water was onboard to lower the ship’s stern without exceeding the maximum permissible draft of 9.5 meters. The second attempt to navigate the canal commenced just after noon. The tugs "Parat" and "OSK Rendsburg" successfully reeled in the "Zeynep Kiran" back into the south lock. A follow-up laser measurement revealed a reduced height of 39.58 meters, allowing the vessel to officially enter the canal shortly before 1 p.m. For additional visuals and details, visit the coverage here: https://www.kn-online.de/lokales/kiel/frachter-bei-hoehenkontrolle-in-der-schleuse-in-kiel-gestoppt-W4BXG2IOAJCUBNPNU7OGIAD6PQ.html
