Heroic Medevac: German Crew Member Rescued 300 Miles Off San Diego

Apr 17, 2013 21:54

On April 16, 2013, a daring medical evacuation operation took place 300 miles offshore from San Diego when a 46-year-old German crewman aboard the vessel 'As Elysia' fell gravely ill with severe abdominal pain. The vessel's crew alerted the U.S. Coast Guard around 5:30 a.m., prompting an immediate response. An MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter team from Coast Guard Sector San Diego took to the skies, initiating their flight to San Clemente Island for refueling before heading to rendezvous with the distressed 590-foot ship. In tandem with the helicopter, an HC-130 Hercules aircraft from Air Station Sacramento was dispatched to assist with communication and coordination efforts during the rescue mission. By approximately 2 p.m., the courageous helicopter crew reached the scene, successfully hoisting the affected crew member aboard. The patient was then flown back to Sector San Diego, where emergency medical personnel awaited to administer further treatment. Notably, the helicopter operation faced challenging conditions, with sea swells reaching 10 feet and wind gusts at 27 knots.
