In a proactive move to secure U.S. maritime interests, the U.S. Coast Guard has been closely monitoring two Chinese research vessels—the 'Jidi' and 'Zhong Shan Da Xue Ji Di'—operating in the Bering Sea off the northern coast of Alaska from August 31 to September 2. The 'Jidi' was detected sailing approximately 265 nautical miles northwest of Utqiagvik, while the 'Zhong Shan Da Xue Ji Di' was found about 230 nautical miles north of the same location. Both vessels were identified as conducting activities over the U.S. Extended Continental Shelf, amidst a wider operation involving five Chinese ships reportedly active in Arctic waters. Prior to this incident, the Coast Guard deployed Cutters 'Waesche (WMSL 751)' and 'Healy' for a joint patrol in the Arctic Ocean, reaffirming its commitment to an enduring presence in the region. Additionally, an HC-130J Hercules, stationed at Air Station Kodiak, was dispatched on August 31 to enhance the aerial surveillance efforts.
