Troubling Waters: The Fate of the Torvang After Capsizing

The maritime community is closely monitoring the ongoing situation involving the Torvang, a freighter that recently capsized in Hendvågen, Averøy. The incident occurred on May 23, 2025, leaving the vessel listing precariously alongside the quay. Five crew members were aboard at the time, and fortunately, all managed to reach safety without injury. However, the ship itself faced dire circumstances, with its cargo hold flooded and nearly submerged.

Following the capsizing, the Norwegian Coastal Administration took control of the situation, deploying resources including fire boats and local lifeboat units. Divers were dispatched over the weekend to assess the vessel's condition, but the cause of its sudden listing remains unknown. The insurance company responsible for the Torvang has since initiated discussions with various salvage companies to devise a plan for raising the ship.

Before salvage operations can commence, a crucial pre-requisite is the removal of approximately 300 tons of sand cargo that the ship was carrying. A sludge suction machine has been ordered in hopes it can also aid in righting the vessel by emptying the hold of water. Although environmental assessments indicate no immediate signs of fuel leakage into the waters, the situation remains precarious as salvage efforts are still pending.

This isn't the first incident involving the Torvang. Four years prior, in June 2015, a near collision occurred on Moldefjord, raising alarms about the vessel's navigation practices after it failed to yield to the ferry Moldefjord. Fortunately, the ferry's captain executed a swift maneuver to avert disaster, but the episode highlighted ongoing concerns regarding the operational conduct of the Torvang and its crew.

As salvage operations loom for the Torvang, maritime authorities continue to monitor developments closely. Investigations into the cause of its capsizing, along with the vessel's operational history, will be crucial in determining future protocols to enhance safety and avoid similar incidents in the unpredictable waters of Norwegian maritime routes.
