Adventures of the Ridens: A Lifeline in the Dover Strait

In the tumultuous waters of the Dover Strait, the Ridens has emerged as a crucial player in rescue missions aimed at saving migrants attempting perilous journeys from France to the United Kingdom. With a series of successful operations, the Ridens has showcased exceptional commitment to humanitarian efforts, often working alongside various maritime resources deployed by CROSS Gris-Nez.On the night of January 18 and into the early hours of January 19, 2025, the Ridens received critical reports of multiple migrant boat departures. This prompted CROSS Gris-Nez to mobilize an array of vessels, including the hydrographic survey vessel Lapérouse, the patrol boat Oyapock, and lifeboats from local stations. Around 5:45 a.m., the Ridens reported a makeshift boat in the Malo-les-Bains area, swiftly launching a rigid inflatable boat (RIB) to monitor the migrants. Noticing the urgency of the situation, the crew rescued three vulnerable individuals attempting to board from the beach and ensured they were safely transported back to Dunkirk.This operation followed another significant rescue, where on January 17 and 18, the Ridens recovered 47 migrants from a distressed vessel experiencing buoyancy issues. In a timely response, the Ridens deployed its dinghy to rescue not only those who had fallen overboard but also others in need of immediate assistance. These migrants were safely disembarked at Dunkirk, highlighting the Ridens’ steadfast readiness to respond to the constant ebb and flow of migrants crossing the Strait.Meanwhile, the vessel expanded its life-saving record on December 13, 2025, when it responded to a report of a migrant boat with engine failure. In a daring rescue initiative, the Ridens successfully saved 28 migrants, showcasing the vessel’s operational capability even under challenging circumstances. Operators managed to restart their engine, and British maritime authorities later took control of the vessel as the migrants were escorted to safety.Throughout these operations, the Ridens has proven to be an invaluable asset in the ongoing crisis, which sees hundreds of individuals risking everything for a chance at a better life.
