Adler-Iv: A Ship's Troubled Waters and Resilience

The Adler-Iv, a familiar name in the maritime routes of the North Frisian Islands, has faced multiple grounding incidents that underscore the challenges in navigating shallow waters. Most notably, on July 13, 2013, the vessel ran aground off the Amrum Odde while returning to Sylt from Amrum. This incident highlighted the operational hurdles posed by the so-called 'Mittelloch', where shallow water rendered the ferry high and dry, necessitating immediate attention.

Adding to its troubled history, the Adler-Iv experienced another grounding on October 2, 2011, while sailing between Amrum and Hörnum with 160 passengers on board. A misjudgment of water depth by the captain may have contributed to this unfortunate event. Fortunately, the professionalism and prompt action from local maritime rescue services ensured the safe evacuation of all passengers, including a dog. The sister ship, Adler VI, played a critical role in facilitating the transfer. After being stranded due to a falling tide, the vessel was able to refloat itself by 4 a.m. the next day, resuming its journey to Hörnum.

In a more recent development, after safely mooring in Hörnum on September 3, 2013, the Adler-Iv underwent a thorough inspection by German Lloyd. The evaluation revealed no significant damage, enabling the ferry to return to its scheduled operations between Amrum, Föhr, and Sylt starting September 4.
