Troubles on the High Seas: The Saga of Akademik-N.strakhov

Recently, the vessel encountered a significant emergency situation in the Kara Sea after suffering a main engine failure on September 11, 2024. This unfortunate incident occurred during a vital scientific expedition aimed at studying the upper sedimentary layers and natural geohazards present in the Arctic seas. The failure of the sixth cylinder rendered the main engine inoperable, prompting the crew to halt operations and seek assistance.Emergency measures were quickly put into place, with a tug dispatched to the Akademik-N.strakhov's location, which was anchored at the mouth of the Ob River. Despite the crew's best efforts, the cause of the engine failure remained undetermined. To ensure the safety of the onboard scientific personnel, the decision was made to transfer the 12 expedition members—primarily affiliated with the Shirshov Institute of Oceanology—onto another research vessel, the Akademik Mstislav Keldysh, which was operating in the same vicinity. A repair crew is expected to be sent to the Akademik-N.strakhov to facilitate its emergency transfer to the port of Murmansk, with towage operations scheduled to commence on September 18.However, the saga of the Akademik-N.strakhov does not end there. This vessel has faced numerous trials since it became stranded in Colombo port, Sri Lanka, in August 2013, following a mechanical failure at the propeller shaft while conducting research in the Indian Ocean. Initially towed to the Maldives, the vessel subsequently made its way to Colombo, where it has languished without electric power, leading to the depletion of essential supplies. At that time, 14 crew members remained aboard, and urgent humanitarian needs arose, with some requiring hospitalization.Despite a total of 45 individuals onboard, including both crew and research staff, the situation was exacerbated by the owner's inability to pay the necessary port dues and repairs, resulting in a significant financial impasse. The Geological Institute of the Russian Academy of Science has been unable to allocate the required funds, leaving the crew to rely on immediate assistance.The ongoing trials of the Akademik-N.strakhov serve as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities that research vessels face while navigating the unpredictable conditions of the world's oceans.
