Emergency Situation for Russian Research Vessel in Kara Sea Following Engine Failure

Sep 17, 2024 09:50

On September 11, 2024, the 'Akademik Nikolay Strakhov', a prominent research vessel, faced a critical emergency in the Kara Sea when its main engine unexpectedly failed. This incident occurred during a routine scientific expedition, which aimed to investigate the upper sedimentary layers and seabed relief, as well as assess natural geohazards in Arctic waters. The breakdown was attributed to a failure in the vessel's sixth cylinder, leading to the immediate shutdown of the main engine. Despite the crew's efforts to diagnose the issue, the root cause remained undetermined, prompting the decision to summon a tug for assistance. Currently anchored at the mouth of the Ob River in the Kara Sea, the situation posed no threat to the health or safety of the onboard crew. A strategic move was made to transfer the 12 expedition members, primarily affiliated with the Shirshov Institute of Oceanology under the Russian Academy of Sciences, onto the 'Akademik Mstislav Keldysh', which was concurrently operating in the vicinity. Plans are underway to ferry a repair crew to the 'Akademik Nikolay Strakhov' to facilitate its emergency transport to the port of Murmansk. The towage operation is scheduled to commence on September 18, ensuring the vessel receives the necessary repairs and attention.

Stranded Research Vessel 'Akademik Nickolay Strakhov' Faces Dire Conditions in Colombo

Mar 21, 2015 19:15

Since August 2013, the research vessel 'Akademik Nickolay Strakhov' has been marooned at Colombo port in Sri Lanka, grappling with severe adverse conditions. The vessel has lost all electric power, and vital supplies have been completely exhausted, leaving 14 crew members in urgent need of assistance, with some requiring hospitalization. Originally conducting important research activities in the Indian Ocean, the 'Akademik Nickolay Strakhov' encountered a mechanical failure at its propeller shaft. After the incident, it was towed to the Maldives before being relocated to Colombo. Of the 45 individuals onboard, which included crew and scientific personnel, only 14 remained for maintenance duties. The ship's owner, The Geological Institute of the Russian Academy of Science in Moscow, is currently unable to cover port dues and necessary repairs due to financial constraints, as the Academy has not allocated the required funds to remedy the situation. The ongoing plight of the vessel highlights the challenges facing maritime operations and the urgent need for support to safeguard the wellbeing of the stranded crew.
