Baie-Comeau: From Impressive Launch to Troubling Propeller Woes

Baie-Comeau, the last of the Canada Steamship Lines' (CSL) Trillium Class self-unloading Lakers, was officially delivered on June 20, 2013, and embarked on her maiden voyage shortly thereafter. After setting sail from Chengxi Shipyard in Jiangyin, China, she was bound for Montreal, Quebec, marking the beginning of her operation across the Great Lakes and the St. Lawrence Seaway. Commanded by Captain Andriy Bondarenko and Chief Engineer Francis Cotton, the journey involved navigating across the Pacific Ocean and through the Panama Canal, taking between 50-60 days to complete. On her arrival in early September, she was to join her sister ships, including the Thunder Bay and Whitefish Bay, enhancing CSL's fleet with state-of-the-art bulk carriers that would soon serve the region’s shipping needs efficiently and sustainably. However, the promising trajectory of the Baie-Comeau has been marred by mechanical issues in recent years, revealing vulnerabilities in its operational reliability. On September 11, 2019, the vessel experienced a problem with one of its controllable pitch propellers near South Cornwall, Ontario. Following this incident, crew members undertook necessary repairs in Cote-Sainte-Catherine, Quebec, allowing the vessel to quickly resume its responsibilities. Just a few months later, on January 13, 2020, a similar failure occurred off Les Escoumins, Quebec, this time necessitating an anchorage at Les Rasades for thorough assessment and repairs. These recurring propeller issues raise concerns about the vessel's reliability and operational efficiency, despite its robust design and initial successful deployment in the Canadian shipping industry.
