The Troubled Voyage of Basen: From Fire to Bankruptcy and Tow to Breakers

The escalating troubles of the vessel Basen highlight the precarious nature of maritime operations and the profound impact of unexpected incidents on the shipping industry. On March 6, 2019, the ship was struck by a fire while undergoing repairs at Storsandøy Way on Henda, prompting quick action from local authorities to extinguish the flames. Fortunately, no severe injuries were reported, but this incident marked the beginning of a series of unfortunate events for the vessel.

Fast forward to June 25, 2024, Basen collided with a 17-ft pleasure boat off Rosendal, leading to significant ramifications for its operational status. This collision resulted in the vessel receiving 27 serious orders from the Norwegian Maritime Directorate—substantially above the norm for such occurrences. While the ship was subsequently released, it was left without the necessary certificates to resume sailing.

The situation worsened as its owner, the shipping company Sealg, based in Førde, could not sustain operations and ultimately filed for bankruptcy. Despite employing 16 individuals and managing two older cargo ships, the financial strain proved too great, exacerbated by an insurmountable claim of 134,000 Norwegian crowns. Court proceedings in March 2025 reflected the tumultuous state of maritime commerce affected by both accidents and operational management failures.

Finally, on May 30, 2025, the once active vessel Basen was taken in tow by the tug 'Amazon' to be dismantled at the Fosen Gjenvinning company in Stokksund, Trøndelag.
