Bellavia, a Panamax container ship, has faced a series of incidents that highlight the complex challenges in maritime operations and regulatory compliance. KG, was recently fined $1.25 million for failing to report damage to the Bellavia after it arrived at the Port of Long Beach in 2013. This included illicit disposal of oil-contaminated seawater into the ocean due to a crack in the hull developed while traveling through the Panama Canal. The company’s failure to maintain proper records and to disclose hazardous conditions, combined with whistleblower testimony from four crew members, led to severe penalties.
