Berge-Tateyama's Challenging Grounding and Successful Refloating Journey

The Berge-Tateyama, a bulk carrier laden with a significant cargo of 37,500 tons of soybeans, encountered a critical situation when it ran aground on the Paraná River near kilometer 312.5 on June 15, 2023. The vessel was on its route from Cape Town to Las Palmas, navigating downstream from San Martin when it became disabled at approximately 6 a.m. UTC. This grounding not only presented a challenge for the ship but also partially obstructed the shipping channel, prompting immediate attention from maritime authorities and tug operators.

Efforts to refloat the vessel began promptly, with multiple tugs, including 'Brutus', 'Argentino I', and 'Svitzer Mora', mobilized to assist in the operation. Reports indicate that by June 19, the tugs were actively working to dislodge the Berge-Tateyama. On June 20 at 5:30 p.m., their efforts bore fruit as the bulk carrier was successfully refloated. The following day, June 21 at around 12:30 a.m., navigation was reinstated with a newly established maximum draft of 9.45 meters at the previously grounded area. To further facilitate safe passage, a dredger was deployed to improve the draft conditions.
