Caldera-Vista Faces Series of Operational Challenges Amid Safety Concerns

Caldera-Vista, a vessel with a history of operational difficulties, has recently been at the center of multiple incidents that underline the importance of maritime safety and maintenance protocols. On July 5, 2022, the vessel encountered a malfunction in its rudder and propulsion mechanism while docked in the port of Syros, affecting 92 individuals on board. The malfunction necessitated the disembarkation of passengers and their vehicles, as the port authority prohibited the vessel's departure until all defects were rectified and a valid class maintenance certificate was obtained. Earlier in the same year, on May 25, during routine cleaning works, a crew member sustained an injury while working on the ship. The impact on the port side stern resulted in damage to the propulsion system and injured a crew member, who was subsequently taken to a local hospital for treatment. As a consequence of this incident, the vessel was detained in port while damage was assessed and repaired, following which the classification society would issue a maintenance certificate before it could resume operations. Passengers were taken care of by the ship-owning company during this period.
