Tragedy and Transition: The Cape-India's Recent Journey

Cape-India, a 188,000 dwt bulk carrier owned by Taiwanese company U-Ming Marine, has recently been at the center of multiple serious incidents highlighting the inherent dangers of maritime operations. On October 28, 2019, while transiting the Makassar Strait and en route from Tang Shan to Port Walcott, a gas explosion occurred on board, severely injuring a 26-year-old Chinese crew member, He Fengzhi. The vessel promptly notified Indonesian Maritime Authorities and requested medical evacuation to Balikpapan in Eastern Kalimantan. Despite a swift response to transfer the injured crew member to a lifeboat, he succumbed to his injuries shortly after paramedics arrived at the scene and was pronounced dead shortly thereafter. The Cape-India then resumed its voyage around midnight after the tragic incident.

Just a few weeks later, on November 11, 2019, while operating off the coast of East Kalimantan, the Cape-India experienced another explosion that resulted in another fatality. The command center for Indonesia's National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) was alerted after the explosion, which again involved a crew member needing immediate medical assistance. Unfortunately, despite the best efforts of the joint response team that was dispatched early the next day, they found that the victim had already been deceased for some time when retrieved. This incident, also involving a Chinese national, further underscored the vessel's troubled journey, as the Cape-India continued its transit from Dampier to Hua Shan post-incident.

Adding to the complexities surrounding Cape-India, U-Ming Marine recently announced the delivery of this bulk carrier, alongside another vessel, Cape Europe. These ships were built by Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding, with Cape-India being part of a larger order consisting of eight such massive carriers. Despite the recent tragedies, U-Ming is clearly committed to advancing its fleet capabilities, although the incidents raise questions about crew safety and operational protocols aboard their ships. As Cape-India continues its operations, the maritime community will be keenly watching how U-Ming responds to these challenges in ensuring the safety and well-being of its crew members.
