Carmel-I: A Sea of Challenges and Lifesaving Operations

Carmel-I, a container ship currently chartered by CMA CGM for a 7 to 10 month period focusing on trade across Asia, recently played a vital role in a precarious situation 100 nautical miles off the coast of Guam. On March 2, 2024, a 26-year-old crew member was urgently evacuated due to severe abdominal pains during the vessel's passage to Vietnam. The U.S. Coast Guard and the U.S. Navy's Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 25 (HSC-25) responded to a call for medical assistance initiated by the Coast Guard's Joint Rescue Sub-Center in Guam on the evening of March 1. Following recommendations from medical personnel, an MH-60S Knighthawk helicopter was dispatched to the site. Despite facing challenging weather conditions—17-mile winds and 10-foot seas—the helicopter crew successfully airlifted the patient and delivered him to emergency responders; he was later stabilized at Guam Memorial Hospital.
