Critical Medical Evacuation Successfully Executed Off Guam

Mar 05, 2024 10:09

On March 2, 2024, a crew member aboard the 'Carmel 1' was swiftly and safely evacuated approximately 100 nautical miles from Guam by a joint effort from the U.S. Coast Guard and the U.S. Navy's Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 25 (HSC-25). The 26-year-old Filipino crew member experienced severe abdominal pain while the vessel was positioned 400 nautical miles northwest of Guam during its journey to Vietnam. The situation prompted the U.S. Coast Guard's Joint Rescue Sub-Center in Guam to be alerted on the afternoon of March 1. Following an assessment and recommendation for a medical evacuation from a U.S. Coast Guard duty flight surgeon based in Alameda, California, HSC-25's flight surgeon in Guam concurred and mobilized to assist. An MH-60S Knighthawk helicopter crew from HSC-25 reached the distressed 'Carmel 1' the following morning. Despite encountering challenging conditions with 17-mile-per-hour winds and 10-foot seas, the helicopter crew successfully airlifted the patient to safety. Once on board, he was handed over to emergency medical responders from Guam Fire Rescue at Naval Hospital Guam. From there, he was transported to Guam Memorial Hospital, where he was reported to be in stable condition. For further details and visuals, visit the official U.S. Coast Guard news page.
