Cellus Faces Setbacks: From Gearbox Failures to Engine Leaks

Cellus, a vessel primarily engaged in cellulose transport, has encountered a series of significant setbacks that have resulted in lengthy repair processes and troubling downtime. The vessel first attracted attention for its propulsion issues on January 17, 2025, when it was compelled to divert to the emergency port in Glückstadt after experiencing strange noises and vibrations emanating from its engine. This incident revealed that the gear rings on the gear box between the main engine and the propeller had failed, necessitating their removal and sending them back to a Dutch manufacturer for replacement. With repairs expected to take ten weeks for the production of spare parts, plus an additional two weeks for assembly, the estimated cost for the repairs amounted to approximately €250,000. Additionally, the loss incurred from the vessel's layover was pegged at around €450,000, raising concerns about operational viability during this period.

However, as the situation worsened, Cellus faced further complications. By May 14, it was reported that repairs in Glückstadt had gone awry yet again, as new gear parts failed quality control tests due to the discovery of stress cracks, a consequence likely stemming from improper cooling during initial repair attempts. This latest setback has pushed the potential repair costs into the seven-figure range, leading to increasing scrutiny over insurance claims and coverage.

Adding to the vessel's challenges, it also suffered a minor leak in the main engine while en route from Sunderland to Södra Monsteras on January 14, which necessitated immediate on-deck repairs by its crew before it could continue its journey. Despite the quick resolution to this leak, the ongoing issues with the gearbox and subsequent repairs have overshadowed its operational activity.

The combined hardships surrounding the Cellus raise significant questions regarding the operational integrity of the vessel and highlight the broader issues within maritime logistics, especially related to maintenance and emergency response in the shipping industry.
