Navigating Challenges: The Recent Journey of Champion-Jet-1

Champion-Jet-1, operated by Seajets and owned by Marios Iliopoulos, has been in the news recently as it navigates both humanitarian responsibilities and operational challenges. On October 16, 2023, the vessel was called upon by the Ministry of Shipping and Island Policy to facilitate the evacuation of foreign nationals from Israel to Cyprus during a critical period of unrest. The ferry was tasked with transporting tourists and citizens who found themselves stranded in various cities in Israel, particularly Jerusalem. The operation required the vessel to sail to Haifa, where the evacuees would board, and subsequently make its way to Limassol, in Cyprus. To ensure safety throughout the journey, Champion-Jet-1 was provided with a robust escort for both legs of the voyage, highlighting the importance of security in sensitive scenarios.

Earlier this year, the ferry was involved in an incident while maneuvering in the port of Tinos on June 2, 2023. While on its scheduled route from Rafina to several Cycladic islands, including Andros and Mykonos, Champion-Jet-1 collided with the ferry 'Ekaterini P', which was operating a different route. Fortunately, the vessel managed to berth safely, and no injuries or environmental damage were reported, allowing both vessels to continue operations after a class maintenance certificate was issued by the relevant classification societies.

On another front, Champion-Jet-1 has faced mechanical troubles in the past, notably on May 15, 2022, when it experienced a malfunction of its starboard side main engine while on a scheduled route from Piraeus to Serifos. Despite the issues with its electronic speed system, the vessel successfully reached the port of Serifos to disembark passengers and vehicles safely. However, its departure was initially delayed until it could present the necessary maintenance certificate. This series of events illustrates the operational resilience and adaptability of Champion-Jet-1, underscoring its critical role in facilitating passenger transport across Greece and into the international arena amid unforeseen circumstances.
