Champion-Jet-2 Faces Challenges Amidst Safety Concerns and Mechanical Issues

Champion-Jet-2, a prominent vessel operating in the Aegean Sea, is currently under scrutiny following a series of incidents that have raised concerns regarding maritime safety and operational integrity. The vessel's recent docking at the central port of Milos on May 25 was marred by two unsuccessful mooring attempts that were seriously impacted by adverse weather conditions. During the second attempt, the failure of the ship's stern starboard mooring rope led to the vessel being precariously moored at a steep 35-degree angle. This situation prompted the Port Authority of Milos to implement a safety protocol, halting the unloading procedures until the ship was safely secured. Despite the risks, the vessel unloaded 353 passengers and vehicles before continuing its route, drawing attention to the captain's decision to ignore repeated orders to secure the ramps. Consequently, this prompted the initiation of an administrative investigation aimed at penalizing the master for disregarding port authority instructions.

Adding to the vessel's tumultuous operational history, on July 19, 2024, another incident occurred while still docked at Sifnos. A mooring rope snapped due to unfavorable weather conditions, causing it to strike a two-wheeled vehicle with two occupants, although fortunately, both riders escaped with minor injuries. Officials from the Port Authority acted swiftly, ensuring the passengers received medical checks at the nearby health center, illustrating a concerning pattern of mishaps linked to the Champion-Jet-2.

Notably, the vessel also reported mechanical troubles on August 29, 2022, when the master informed the Port Authority of Sifnos about a failure in its port side external main engine while en route from Serifos. The ship safely navigated to Sifnos and subsequently disembarked 92 passengers, but its sailing was initially barred until proper seaworthiness certificates were presented. This incident highlighted the vessel's reliance on multiple functioning engines for safe operations.
