CMA CGM Rivoli: Maritime Heroism in Rescues at Sea

The CMA CGM Rivoli has recently been in the spotlight, demonstrating remarkable maritime heroism through its dual rescue missions in international waters. In a noteworthy incident on May 15, 2024, this container ship came to the aid of five Indonesian fishermen who were stranded at sea after a collision with an unknown container vessel in the Malacca Strait. After being adrift for more than 10 hours, the fishermen, who had initially jumped into the water to escape their sinking fishing boat, were finally rescued when the 'CMA CGM Rivoli', after locating them amidst the challenging conditions of thick fog and poor visibility, found four of them clinging to a piece of wood. The fifth fisherman was rescued at a different site by local fishermen. One of the fishermen sustained severe injuries and required urgent medical attention upon being transferred to the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency’s boat. Following recovery efforts facilitated by the Indonesian Consulate, the four fishermen returned home on May 27, a testament to the effective humanitarian actions carried out by the crew of the 'CMA CGM Rivoli'.

Additionally, the vessel has also been making headlines as it carried 26 migrants rescued from a rubber boat off the Libyan coast. These migrants, who had originally set sail from Benghazi, found themselves adrift in perilous waters following a breakdown of their boat on March 5, 2022. Despite urgent calls for help sent by the NGO Alarm Phone, both the Italian and Maltese coast guards declined to assist, leaving these vulnerable individuals in a dire situation. It was the 'CMA CGM Rivoli' that answered the call, successfully locating and rescuing the migrants as it journeyed from Singapore to Dunkirk.
