Heroic Rescue: CMA CGM Rivoli Saves Indonesian Fishermen After Collision

Jun 02, 2024 18:24

On May 15, 2024, a remarkable rescue operation unfolded when the container ship 'CMA CGM Rivoli' came to the aid of four fishermen stranded in the Malacca Strait. The fishermen, hailing from Pangkalan Brandan in Langkat, faced peril after their fishing vessel collided with an unidentified container ship around 9 a.m. while anchored in the busy waters. The unfortunate incident left them adrift for over 10 hours without any immediate rescue options. As the crew of the 'CMA CGM Rivoli', which was making its way from Singapore to Dunkirk, scanned the sea, they discovered four of the fishermen clinging to debris from their sunken boat by 7 p.m. local time. Meanwhile, a fifth fisherman managed to reach safety after being rescued by local fishermen from Langkat. The collision was attributed to adverse weather conditions, including thick fog that significantly reduced visibility to less than five meters, which hindered efforts to recognize the approaching vessel. Crucially, the container ship did not sound its horn, further complicating the situation for the fishermen. After being rescued, the four fishermen were promptly transferred to the 'Pekar', a boat operated by the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (APMM), on the evening of May 17. One of the individuals suffered a broken arm, alongside other injuries, and was swiftly taken to a hospital in Malaysia for treatment. In the wake of the incident, officials from the Indonesian Consulate General in Penang arrived in Perak to provide support and ensure the fishermen received the necessary assistance. After their recovery, the fishermen began their journey home on May 27, departing from Penang with the help of the consular team. Their poignant journey concluded with an invitation to the Wisma Indonesia Penang, a foreign consulate located in George Town, Malaysia, before they returned to their homeland at Kuala Namu Airport.

CMA CGM Rivoli on Course for Dunkirk with Rescued Migrants

Mar 10, 2022 11:28

The container ship 'CMA CGM Rivoli' is currently en route to Dunkirk, carrying a group of 26 migrants who fled Libya, with an estimated arrival on March 13. The individuals embarked on a perilous journey from Benghazi on March 3, traveling in a rubber boat. After two days at sea, they found themselves adrift in international waters and reached out to Alarm Phone for assistance. Unfortunately, both the Italian and Maltese coast guards declined Alarm Phoneโ€™s appeals for help, directing the NGO to liaise with Libyan authorities instead. On March 6, Alarm Phone received confirmation that the stranded migrants had been rescued by the 'CMA CGM Rivoli,' which had spotted them while on its route from Singapore.
