Collision Aftermath: The Journey of Colombo-Express

On September 29, 2014, the Colombo-Express was involved in a significant maritime incident, colliding with the 332-metre container ship, Maersk Tanjong, in the Suez Canal near Port Said. This unfortunate event occurred at 5:33 UTC as the Colombo-Express attempted to overtake the Maersk Tanjong while making its way through the convoy. Reports indicate that a malfunction in the hydraulic rudder mechanism caused the vessel to veer unexpectedly to port, ultimately leading to a collision that left a notable 20-metre dent on her port side. Thankfully, there were no injuries reported, nor was there any pollution resulting from the incident. However, three containers were lost from the Maersk Tanjong, of which one has since been recovered.

Following the collision, both vessels were temporarily moored in the canal lakes while investigations were conducted and necessary repairs were arranged. Subsequent inspections raised concerns regarding the operational integrity of the Columbus-Express, compelling it to dock in Busan on October 21 for repairs specifically addressing the damaged forward port side bulwark.

After a brief stay in Busan, the vessel successfully completed the repairs and departed the New Port Harbour on October 27 at 5 a.m., setting sail for Yangshan, with an estimated time of arrival on October 28. The swift response to the incident and efficient repair operations have ensured that the Colombo-Express could continue its operational schedule, highlighting the complexities and rapid recoveries that define modern maritime logistics.
