Hydraulic Rudder Malfunction Leads to Collision Near Port Said

Oct 01, 2014 09:20

A maritime incident occurred on September 29, 2023, involving the container ship "Colombo Express" and the boxship "Maersk Tanjong" in the Suez Canal, close to Port Said. The collision was attributed to a failure in the hydraulic rudder system of the "Colombo Express," which resulted in an abrupt hard turn to port. This maneuver caused the "Colombo Express" to veer towards the "Maersk Tanjong," leading to the unfortunate contact between the two vessels. Both ships were en route to Jeddah at the time of the incident. Fortunately, two containers that were lost during the collision have since been recovered. Following the incident, the "Colombo Express" resumed its journey towards Jeddah later that same evening, accompanied by the "Maersk Tanjong".

Collision of Container Vessels in Suez Canal Near Port Said

Sep 29, 2014 16:43

On September 29, 2014, at 5:33 UTC, a maritime incident occurred in the Suez Canal near Port Said involving the 332-meter container ship 'Maersk Tanjong' and the well-known boxship 'Colombo Express'. At the time of the collision, 'Maersk Tanjong' was navigating away from the Suez Canal Container Terminal to participate in the second convoy, while 'Colombo Express' was moving through the same convoy. Reports indicate that during an attempt to overtake 'Maersk Tanjong', 'Colombo Express' mismanaged its rudder control when a left rudder was applied, resulting in a hard turn to port. The unfortunate collision caused a significant 20-meter dent on the left side of 'Colombo Express'; however, remarkably, there were no reported injuries or environmental pollution following the incident. The collision also led to the loss of three containers from 'Maersk Tanjong', of which one has since been recovered. Consequently, operations for the second southbound convoy were temporarily halted. Both container vessels have been secured at the canal lakes while an investigation is underway and necessary repairs are completed.
