Challenges and Triumphs: The Story of Alkinoos in Recent Maritime Operations

Alkinoos has recently been at the center of various maritime challenges highlighting the complexities of reliable ferry operations. On January 23, 2022, the vessel experienced a notable incident when it lost its port side anchor during its usual route from Igoumenitsa to Corfu. Following the captain's prompt report to the Central Port Authority of Corfu, the ferry managed to berth safely. The swift assistance of a private diver led to the anchor's recovery, ensuring the ship's continued operational integrity. An inspection confirmed the anchor's functionality, allowing the ship to continue its services without further delay, demonstrating the effective management protocols adhered to by the crew and port authorities.

However, the operational history of the Alkinoos reflects more than just successful recoveries. A significant engine failure on June 15, 2023, underscored the challenges faced by the vessel. The incident in Igoumenitsa rendered the starboard side main engine inoperative, preventing the ferry from departing with 14 cargo vehicles and 13 passengers on board. The Central Port Authority swiftly restricted the ferry from sailing until necessary repairs were completed and certification of class maintenance was obtained. After timely repairs, the Alkinoos was able to resume its journey, albeit with a slight delay.

Notably, operational delays also affected the ferry on April 30 when a truck driver’s noncompliance with port regulations resulted in a 1.40-hour delay in departure. This incident led to the arrest of a 37-year-old driver who obstructed the ferry’s departure by failing to remove his vehicle, which lacked the necessary tickets. The situation required the intervention of another driver to safely transport the truck off the vessel, allowing the Alkinoos to finally sail with 295 passengers onboard. Adding to the drama, the original truck driver fell ill during the incident and required medical attention before being detained for his actions.
