Tragedy at Sea: The Aftermath of the Kmp-Putri-Yasmin Fire Incident

On August 19, the maritime community was dealt a heavy blow as another victim succumbed to injuries sustained in the fire aboard the Kmp-Putri-Yasmin. Hardian, a resident of Gelogor Village, passed away in the Intensive Care Unit at the Tripat Regional General Hospital after battling severe respiratory failure for eight days. His condition was particularly critical due to the excessive seawater he inhaled during the chaotic evacuation, which ultimately led to aspiration pneumonia and Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS). Out of the total passengers affected by this harrowing incident, 24 were hospitalized, with Hardian identified as the most severely injured. Tragically, four other individuals remain missing, raising concerns in the local community about their fate.

The search for these missing persons, which began shortly after the fire broke out in the Lombok Strait, officially concluded on the same day Hardian's death was reported. The operation lasted eight days and involved a united effort from a range of agencies and organizations. Reports indicate that 212 individuals were rescued from the burning vessel, while one was tragically found dead. The coordinated search efforts included marine and aerial units, encompassing SAR vessels, Navy patrol boats, and helicopters conducting aerial surveillance. Despite the expansive search efforts, which encompassed areas around Lombok, Bali, and Java, no signs of the four missing passengers were uncovered, leading to the decision to end the operation.

As the search was called off, the Mataram Search and Rescue Office expressed gratitude to the myriad of supporting entities involved in the process—from military personnel and police to local fishermen who continued to report any potentially relevant sightings.
