In a troubling incident at the Yokohama anchorage, a trio of container ships was involved in a dramatic collision late at night on March 21, 2019, at 11:30 p.m. The Antigua Barbuda-flagged vessel, 'Marcliff', had just departed the Nonmoku Terminal en route to Nagoya when it first struck the 'APL Guam', which sustained damage to its bow. After this initial impact, the 'Marcliff' continued its unintentional path and collided with the moored 'Hansa Steinburg', inflicting damage to the port side bow above the waterline. Fortunately, by March 22, all ships involved were safely anchored at Yokohama with no reports of any oil spill incidents. On December 31, 2015, American President Lines (APL) celebrated the launch of its latest service, Guam Express, with its maiden journey to the port of Saipan. After ringing in the New Year in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI), the U.S.-flagged vessel set sail for Guam the following day. Originally scheduled to dock in Saipan in November, delays pushed the debut voyage by approximately a month due to necessary safety compliance measures, according to John Selleck, APL’s general manager for Guam and Micronesia. APL Guam underwent a transformation in China, being dry-docked and modified to meet U.S. flag requirements. With a substantial capacity of 1,000 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units), the ship can transport up to 1,000 twenty-foot shipping containers or 550 forty-foot containers, in addition to accommodating 200 refrigerated containers. This new route aims to enhance maritime logistics in the region, and the successful launch marks a significant milestone for APL Guam's operations.
