On February 21, 2015, a medical emergency unfolded aboard the cargo ship 'Northern Dexterity' as a 39-year-old Filipino sailor required urgent evacuation due to a suspected case of shingles. The vessel, which was en route from Bremerhaven to South Carolina, reached out to Bermuda Maritime Operations on the afternoon of February 20 to organize the medical transfer. The ship approached the East End of Bermuda early on the morning of February 21 and rendezvoused with the pilot boat 'St David' at the designated Five Fathom Hole. At 7:45 a.m., the transfer took place, allowing the sailor to be relocated to the pilot boat, where he received an initial assessment from a local physician. He was then swiftly transported to Ordnance Island in St George’s and subsequently taken by ambulance to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital for further treatment. Meanwhile, the 'Northern Dexterity' continued its course to Charleston on the east coast of the United States to deliver its cargo of containers. Remarkably, the affected crew member was discharged from the hospital later that same day and was expected to return home shortly after.
