In a dedicated environmental operation carried out in August and September 2019, the tanker 'Henda' successfully lightered 299 cubic meters of oil from the sunken vessel 'Lindesnäs', located approximately 10 kilometers off the coast of Södermanland, Sweden. The operation was supported by the work vessel 'Vina'. The 'Lindesnäs', which tragically sank during a snowstorm in 1957 while en route from Nynäshamn to Norrköping, was carrying a cargo of 1,732 cubic meters of kerosene at the time. Recognized as one of the 30 most environmentally hazardous wrecks by the Swedish Maritime Administration, the wreck of 'Lindesnäs' had long been a concern due to potential oil leakage. To mitigate this, the Danish firm JD-Contractor AS was enlisted to execute the oil removal operation. This involved carefully penetrating the vessel's hull within a controlled environment to prevent further oil spills. Once the hull was accessed, teams worked meticulously to empty the tanks, successfully pumping kerosene and diesel to the 'Henda'. The collected oil was subsequently transported ashore for responsible recycling, while any residue that could not be salvaged was set aside for appropriate waste management procedures. During the recovery efforts, divers also discovered a 46-meter-long section of ghost yarn entangled with the wreck. This fishing debris was salvaged and brought ashore for either recycling or proper destruction. Tragically, two deceased seals were found within the ghost yarn, highlighting the ongoing issue of marine debris impacting wildlife.
