Emergency Medevac Operation in Chesapeake Bay Saves Crew Member
On January 5, 2022, a dramatic medical emergency unfolded aboard the 'Chem Jupiter', a tanker ship traveling from Baltimore. As the vessel navigated the waters of Chesapeake Bay near Kent Island, a crew member suddenly required urgent medical assistance. Around 8:45 a.m., the U.S. Coast Guard-Sector Maryland promptly reached out to SYSCOM, requesting support from the Maryland State Police (MSP) for an aerial extraction. Due to the severity of the crew member’s condition, transferring to a smaller Coast Guard vessel was not feasible. Responding swiftly, MSP Aviation Command Trooper 6, stationed at Easton Airport in Talbot County, launched to locate the 'Chem Jupiter', which was moving north at a speed of 12 knots. Once on scene, the helicopter crew quickly established communication with both the Coast Guard and the captain of the tanker.
