Cargo Ship John Mitchell Overloaded During Kiel Port Control

Mar 18, 2010 21:11

On March 18, 2010, at approximately 10:50 a.m., the police conducted a routine inspection at the port of Kiel where they discovered that the cargo vessel 'John Mitchell,' IMO number 9121857, was overloaded by 200 tons of potash. This excess weight resulted in the ship having a draught that exceeded the permissible limit by 13 centimeters. Notably, the vessel had no ballast water in its tanks to assist in lightening the load through pumping. Consequently, a safety fine of €1,470 was imposed. Following the removal of excess freshwater, the ship was granted permission to navigate the Kiel Canal, ultimately arriving at Rendsburg, where plans were made to offload the surplus cargo. The 'John Mitchell' successfully berthed in Rendsburg at 8 p.m. the same day.
