Engine Failure Halts Sanctioned Russian Vessel 'Adler' in Kattegat Waters

Dec 23, 2025 22:34

The ongoing issues surrounding the beleaguered Russian ship 'Adler' have captured the attention of Swedish and Danish authorities since December 20, 2025. This vessel, under sanctions for suspected arms transportation, experienced a critical engine breakdown near the northern entrance of the Øresund Strait. The 'Adler' had departed from the Bronka port close to St. Petersburg, Russia, on December 15, aiming for the North Sea without a specific destination, when it encountered mechanical failure. After drifting, the ship anchored off the Swedish coast in position 56° 15' N 012° 29 E, situated north of Höganäs in Skåne. Reports from the Swedish Coast Guard indicate significant issues with the ship's propulsion system. In response, the coast guard's emergency tug 'Poseidon-KBV 001' was deployed to monitor the situation, with additional Coast Guard units standing by for any necessary assistance. On December 20, Swedish customs personnel, aided by the Coast Guard, conducted a boarding operation and inspection of the vessel, which continued into December 21. By the afternoon of December 21, after completing their assessment, Swedish authorities allowed the 'Adler' to leave Swedish waters later that evening. Temporary repairs to its propulsion system were carried out using onboard equipment. The ship resumed its journey on December 22, returning to service with an AIS status of 'for orders.' Owned by the Moscow-based firm M Leasing, the 'Adler' is under strict EU and US sanctions. Established in 2021, M Leasing has drawn scrutiny for its alleged role in weapon transportation for the Russian government. Recently, this vessel has made multiple voyages to North Africa, reinforcing concerns regarding its freight activities. Further details and images can be found in reports from sources such as Expressen, TV4, SVD, and the Swedish Coast Guard.
