On September 12, 2025, a significant maritime rescue operation unfolded as the cargo vessel 'Admiral de Ribas' responded to a distress call from the JRCC of the Greek Coast Guard. While on its passage from Damietta, the ship successfully located and rescued 59 migrants in dire need of assistance, just south of Gavdos. Following the rescue, the 'Admiral de Ribas' navigated towards the port of Tigani in Paleochora. Upon arrival, the migrants were swiftly transferred to a Greek Coast Guard patrol boat and subsequently brought safely to the port of Tigani. After their arrival, they were escorted to a temporary accommodation facility in Agia Chania for further support. A preliminary investigation into the circumstances surrounding their rescue is currently underway by the Central Port Authority of Chania. This incident highlights ongoing maritime challenges and the essential role of rescue operations in the region.
