Joint Rescue Effort by US Coast Guard, Navy, and Samaritan Vessels Successfully Medivacs Crew Member
On March 19, 2021, a remarkable joint operation involving the US Coast Guard, the Navy, and courageous good Samaritan vessels led to the successful medevac of an ailing crew member from the tanker 'Antonis', which was en route from Ust-Luga to Hamilton, Bermuda. The operation was initiated when the Coast Guard’s Rescue Coordination Center in Bermuda alerted the Fifth District command center in Portsmouth at approximately 1 p.m. on March 17, reporting a crew member in deteriorating health aboard the vessel. In response, the Coast Guard orchestrated the coordination of several nearby commercial vessels to deliver essential medical supplies utilizing the AMVER system. Additionally, an HC-130 Hercules aircrew was deployed from Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City to enhance the response with further medical resources. The Hercules crew successfully air-dropped these supplies, which were promptly retrieved by the crew of the 'Antonis'. Despite the delivery of additional medical support, the condition of the crew member continued to worsen. After consulting with a Coast Guard physician, it was clear that immediate evacuation was necessary to ensure the crew member received appropriate medical attention. Consequently, both a MH-60 Jayhawk aircrew and HC-130 Hercules team, equipped with a relief helicopter crew from Air Station Elizabeth City, were dispatched to facilitate the medevac operation on Friday. At around noon on March 19, the MH-60 Jayhawk crew made a brief stop to refuel aboard the USS 'Arlington', a San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock of the U.S. Navy, before heading toward Bermuda. Once they reached the 'Antonis', positioned approximately 150 miles off the Bermuda coast, the relief crew executed the medevac hoist at approximately 4 p.m., successfully lifting the crew member from the tanker. The crew member was then flown to Bermuda, where they were handed over to waiting emergency medical services. Following the operation, the Coast Guard aircrews made their way back to North Carolina, refueling once again with the USS 'Arlington' before concluding their mission.
