On April 19, 2017, at 08:45 a.m., the container ship 'Axel Spirit' became the target of a pirate attack while navigating approximately 60 miles SSW of Brass in coordinates 03 25N 005 46E. A group of nine armed pirates in a skiff approached the vessel and opened fire. Following protocol, the crew promptly raised the alarm and activated the fire pumps, while non-essential personnel retreated to the citadel for safety. The ship's captain skillfully maneuvered the vessel, increasing speed and executing evasive actions to avoid the attackers. Simultaneously, communication was established with an escort vessel for additional support. Fortunately, the aggressive skiff eventually abandoned the pursuit and retreated. The 'Axel Spirit' was en route from Abidjan to Nigeria, and by April 21, the tanker successfully docked at the Brass Oil Terminal, completing its journey despite the harrowing incident.
