On November 15, 2017, at 09:45 AM, the dedicated team of the NSRI Port Elizabeth sprang into action when they launched their rescue vessel, 'Spirit of Toft'. This operation was in collaboration with an EC Government Health EMS rescue paramedic, as they set out to assist the 'Evangelia Pedrakis', which was en route from Santos to Cigading, located 3.5 miles offshore from Port Elizabeth. Upon reaching the vessel, the EMS par medic and two skilled NSRI rescue swimmers boarded the ship to assess an adult crew member experiencing hypertension. After providing critical medical evaluation, the patient was stabilized before being secured in a harness for safe transfer onto the NSRI’s rescue craft using the ship's gangplank. The patient was then escorted back to Port, under the watchful care of both NSRI personnel and the EMS paramedic. Upon arrival, the patient was transported by ambulance to the hospital in stable condition.
