Freighter Aegir Runs Aground in Chile's Aysén Region
On April 18, 2017, the freighter 'Aegir' encountered a troubling incident while navigating the Chacabuco Canal in Chile's scenic Aysén region. The vessel, which was en route to Punta Arenas carrying fish feed, ran aground at coordinates 45° 44'S 073° 57'W. Following this grounding, the hull sustained a breach resulting in water entering the ship. Initial assessments suggest that the Aegir may have been deliberately grounded to prevent it from fully sinking. In response to this maritime emergency, the Chilean Navy promptly activated their rescue operations, deploying the speedboat 'Aysen,' the patrol boat 'LPM 4411,' and the salvage vessel 'Micalvi' to assist. Fortunately, all 12 crew members aboard the Aegir were reported to be in good health despite the incident. For further details and visuals, Spanish-language articles can be found at Diario Aysén and El Divisadero.
