Hapag-Lloyd Welcomes New 15,000-TEU Containership Afif to Its Growing Fleet
German maritime giant Hapag-Lloyd has proudly added a state-of-the-art 15,000-TEU containership, named Afif, to its esteemed fleet. This impressive vessel, which is currently en route to Busan, South Korea, signifies a significant enhancement in Hapag-Lloyd's operational capabilities. Measuring 368 meters in length and 51 meters in width, the Afif is distinguished as the inaugural ship of this class to don Hapag-Lloyd's iconic colors and design, according to a report by World Maritime News. This delivery comes as part of Hapag-Lloyd's strategic initiative following its merger with Dubai-based United Arab Shipping Company (UASC), a move that fortifies its standing as the world’s fifth-largest liner shipping firm. Hapag-Lloyd now boasts a fleet of 230 vessels with a combined transport capacity of 1.6 million TEU, reflecting an impressive average capacity increase from 5,860 to 6,839 TEU per ship. This expansion is particularly highlighted by the introduction of several 15,000 TEU+ vessels post-merger, positioning Hapag-Lloyd to better meet the demands of global trade. Prior to this significant addition, the largest vessels in its fleet were the Hamburg Express-class ships, each boasting a capacity of 13,200 TEU. The arrival of the Afif marks a new chapter in Hapag-Lloyd's commitment to providing efficient and modern shipping solutions.
